Don't Stay In Mix of the Week 013 - Sander van Doorn (Trance)
December 07, 2009 01:34 PM PST
This Dont Stay In article is about The Gallery @ Ministry of Sound in London, this Fri (11 Dec) We've got our trance trousers on this week! This exclusive mix from Sander Van Doorn is a nice preview of what we can expect to hear from him at The Gallery's NYE Spectacular where he is playing his UK exclusive for NYE at Ministry of Sound!! Right click here and select save as to download the file Here's the mixTrack list: A bit more on Sander... First there were Heineken and Edam, then came Sander van Doorn. The Dutch musical genius may not be as mature as his predecessors but he’s certainly made as much of a global impact in his comparatively short career. Having made his debut in the world-renowned DJ Mag Top 100 at 32 in 2006, before climbing to No.10 in 2009’s poll, the fast rise of Sander van Doorn is a testament to his raw talent and dedication. In just seven years he’s clocked up more dance floor destroyers, sell out gigs and awards than most artists do in a lifetime and his journey is still in its infancy. From the start Sander (and his alter egos; Sam Sharp, Purple Haze, Filterfunk & Sandler) has produced a variety of sounds at a level that only most producers can dream of, combining elements of trance, electro, techno and house constantly blowing away his fans and comrades, keeping everyone guessing what he’s going to come up with next. His debut artist album ‘Supernaturalistic’ was released in 2008 to rave reviews and launched a 32-date global album tour. He followed this by winning the coveted prize of ‘Best Breakthrough Artist’ at WMC’s IDMA, where he also received a nomination for ‘Best Underground Track’ with ‘Riff’ and ‘Best Electro House’ DJ at 2009’s Ibiza House Awards. It’s not only Sander’s solo productions that keep everyone on their toes but his bootlegs, covers and incredible remixes. This year we have seen Sander deliver official interpretations for multi-million selling and multi-award winning band, The Killers, with his re-working of their single ‘Spaceman’, as well as ‘Peace’ from electronic legends Depeche Mode. Also let’s not forget his fantastic selection of collaborations, with artists including friend and mentor Marco V on the monster tracks ‘Organic’ and ‘What Say’, and ‘Close My Eyes’, the European Top 20 hit, with a man that needs no introduction, Robbie Williams. Sander is one of the most in-demand genre crossing producers of his generation, his releases regularly picking up support from as wide reaching places as Pete Tong, Judge Jules, Tiesto and Carl Cox – you’re as likely to find his records in a house DJ’s box as a trance DJs. In fact, in 2009, each and everyone one of Sander’s releases (Bastillon, Ninety and Bliksem) have made it to No.1 on Beatport. Not content with taking the world by storm with his productions, Sander’s DJ skills are a force to be reckoned with. Every year sees Sander play to over one million clubbers. He consistently headlines huge events from Sensation to Global Gathering, from Trance Energy and Mysteryland through to his high profile summer residency at Cream in Ibiza. It was Sander’s DJing experiences around the world that inspired his own night ‘Dusk Till Doorn’, taking clubbing to the next level, offering the ultimate Sander van Doorn experience. Having already wowed crowds at the launch in May at The Gallery, Ministry of Sound, in Ibiza in June and North America in October, Sander’s musical and visual journey continues to pleasure crowds around the globe. Sander is extremely grateful to his fans and likes to give back as much possible. You can always be sure to find a couple of competition winners somewhere in an SvD crowd, on his private jet, in the DJ booth or staying at his hotel - Sander believes that giving the fans a piece of the action is a great way of repaying them for their support. In 2006 Sander set up his own radio show, giving fans the opportunity to hear him no matter where they might be. Now in it’s 3rd year and syndicated globally as well as being available as a Podcast, 'Identity' has given Sander a platform to distribute the sound that thousands of fans adore. As Sander approaches the most exciting time of his career and having already achieved so much in a relatively short period of time, it’s easy to see where this man is heading – Number 1! You can tell when Nick Warren's on the decks. The music emanating from the man is that perfect club mix of driving percussion and soaring musicality, bursting out of the speakers, soaking everyone in melody, drenching them in sound. On the floor, where it really matters, his crowd experience all the peaks and troughs that make his music so unique. Locking on early, you'll hear his deeper take on house, which morphs, as the club mood changes, into harder territory, music for sweating and losing yourself to. And at that point when the light are low, when smoke fills the room and people are dancing on instinct, that's when the melodies start to rise over the top, washing the worries and exertions of life away, completing the club experience. That's why Nick Warren is so respected, because he knows how to truly work a club, and a crowd, delivering again and again. That's what comes with vision and, just as importantly, experience.
Nick, a music obsessive who grew up on punk, reggae and pop was, like so many DJs turned onto the power of house music in the late 80s. Living in Bristol, he'd been playing tunes for a few years before, running his own club night, Wiggle, in the city with a friend and he took immediately to this new sound coming from America. In 1990, a new house club, Vision took the city by storm and in a perfect bit of timing, he was offered the chance to play in the upstairs room, spinning weird downbeat Balearic records and mixing house with music by The Clash and Frank Sinatra. Catching the attention of a group of guys who had their own band, he was roped in to tour with them as their DJ when they went to play America. The group was Massive Attack.
As their official DJ, he began working on music of his own. Joining up with another Bristol producer, Jody Wisternoff in 1994 to form Way Out West, they recorded the seminal 'Ajare' single together, a huge progressive house club hit. Three years later, and with the duo now signed to Deconstruction, it was re-released, this time breaking into the charts and finally, the nation's consciousness. Then came 'The Gift'. With a memorable hook line culled from an old hardcore track, its mix of ambient soundscapes and breaks won it universal plaudits, sending Nick and Jody onto Top of the Pops and catapulting Nick into the league of the superstar DJ. Their three albums, 'Blue' and "Intensify" and took every single one of the pair's influences and shaped them into a groundbreaking collection of tracks that stayed in the CD players of the UK and beyond for a long, long time. Their third album “Don’t Look Now” was released in 2005, which they toured as a live band with Faithless. Album Four We Love Machine has just been released.
He has also taken over A&R at Hope Recordings as the final link in the chain that allows him to represent the sound that he has so long championed.
Nick Warren isn't for standing still, he loves what he's doing too much for that, but you know that already.
If you want to see Nick in action, then check him out at the Gallery @ Ministry of Sound this Friday!!

Bonjourno! At 23 hailing from south London Sam Pepper is a hyperactive dj that has an excitable passion for music often missed by certain chin strokey types. Playing an energetic mix of jump up electro, disco grooves and heavy basslines he is rapidly becoming one of the hottest up and coming djs on the club circuit. His passion for performing started out at the age of 17 throwing college parties in dodgy bars on borrowed sound systems, since then the venues have changed but the energy is the same, when Sam Pepper is on, the house party vibes come through the decks as loud and clear as the latest heavy-duty club track. Having already played out big festival sets at Snowbombing, Bestival, Get loaded, and Lovebox and supported artists such as Pendulum, Filthy dukes, Jaymo, Deepgroove, Alex metric and Grum, Sam Pepper has recently won a place supporting Radio 1’s Kissy Sell Out on his Kissy and Ko UK Tour. With an increasingly busy schedule at some of the coolest clubs in the country and a new exploration in to production Sam Pepper is definitely a name to keep an eye out for in the near future! Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger - Daft Punk (Justin Faust Remix) Here's the mix!

It’s not quite a live mix, but I'll let him explain that here… “I have a new ‘not so live but wish it was’ mix for you I recorded this morning after I played Fabric on the evening of Sunday 4th October at WetYourSelf. Unfortunately there were some issues with the Live recording but thanks to my boredom the following day and seratos history function I was able to see what tracks i played on the night and in what order I played them so I decided to re record the set. Here is our first Don't Stay In mix of the week! It's by a personal favourite of mine, Enzo Siragusa. Most of you will know that Enzo is the music brains behind the Fuse brand which is smashing the arse out of Brick Lane's 93 Feet East every Sunday and Delano on Ibiza's Playa den Bossa every Tuesday! I was at Fuse last night, it was mobbed and going RIGHT off! Enzoalso been a member of the DJ Mixes group since it's creation back in 2004 where he got early recognition for his mixes on here! Right click here and select save as to download the file Tracklist: And here's a bit more on Enzo…
Attuned to the dance floor through more than a decade of DJ’ing, Enzo’s deep groove based house sound is at the heart of London’s iconic Fuse party at 93 Feet East. In less than a year Fuse has amassed a loyal following of ravers young and old, as it has fast become an institution for London clubbers. Enzo's DJing is clearly central to this success, but so too is his careful direction of the sound, using his innate understanding of the dancefloor to program the right DJs at the right time. When he steps up to play, his often marathon DJ sets are subtle, dynamic and always full of energy. Playing people rather than just music he’s known for creating a unique vibe through his sound which the Fuse faithful now simply refer to as 'Fusic'. Growing up in the early 90’s rave scene, dance music has always been a way of life for Enzo. Since buying his first record in 1992 his passion for music has seen him collect and play all shades of electronic music before settling into the deep underground house sound his is known for today. Throughout this time he has always had an instinctive understanding of what the crowd wants to hear, a deep connection that all his DJ sets are built on. Playing for such a musically aware crowd on a weekly basis has had a profound effect on Enzo as he creates his own music. Getting immediate and honest feedback from the crowd means that the end results for Enzo are tracks that are essential dancefloor winners. His debut release Himba, coming out this autumn on Nima Gorji's Welt Sounds label, is a prime example of this. Deep and enchanting it hooks you in early with its warmth, then inspired by a great African vocal, it lifts you away. You get the feeling, the feeling that this is just the beginning for Enzo, clearly one of hottest talents in the UK today. Upcoming dates: Fuse Join the Fuse group here Fuse Enjoy the mix and I’ll hopefully see you out and about! Peace! O xx Article by Owain-DSI |
